H.P.V. (Human Papilloma Virus)
What is it?
Human Papilloma Virus is a virus that infects the skin and mucous membranes (tissues that line the mouth, cervix ,vagina urethra, and anus).
Who gets it?
Both men and women, more than 50 percent of sexually active people will have genital HPV at some point in their lives.
Am I at risk?
If you are having vaginal, anal, or oral sex you are at risk. HPV is transmitted two ways: by skin to skin contact and by contact with bodily fluids.
How will I know if I am infected?
HPV is the most common viral STI. Most people with HPV don’t know they are infected. Some people with HPV have warts on or in their genitals.
What should I do if I am sexually active?
A Pap test can detect HPV in women. Infection with certain strains of HPV causes cervical cancer in women. Warts caused by HPV can be treated, but treatment does not guarantee the warts won’t return.
Don’t give in. Say yes to abstinence. If you are already having sex…get checked. Then next time, remember the possible consequences of saying yes to sex.
